We’ve saved the best for last in our six-part series, ending with Manager, Technical Writing, Jerry Gastineau. Jerry is passionate about the shared goal of the editorial team, which is creating the most accurate data, so that our users can fix cars correctly. What did you do before you came to Mitchell?

Before I came to Mitchell, I was in the collision repair industry. My parents owned a collision repair shop, so I grew up in it. I also worked in multiple shops and then finally came to Mitchell about 10 years ago.

What are the biggest changes you’ve seen in the industry from when you started?

One of the biggest changes I've noticed is the quality of data that the OEMs are providing, which in turn allows us to provide quality data back out to our end users. The vehicle manufacturers are really concerned with safety of their occupants, and collision repairers also are very concerned about restoring the car to its pre-accident condition, safely. The level of information that the OEMs are releasing really facilitates much better repairs and much better data.

What type of information is used in the creation of the Mitchell data?

We get information directly from the OEMs. We get electronic price file feeds. We have access to OEM parts catalogs, access to OEM service information. We attend training that the technicians in the shop attend. We attend hands-on as well, and we take all that information into account as we're developing labor times.

Can you walk us through a recent customer interaction you had? What was the problem and the resolution?

One of the things that I really enjoy about talking to customers is being able to help them. It's great to have access to all the information that we do, but the customer actually has the car. We can have a meaningful discussion about what they're seeing and what repairs they're performing, what our research shows. When our customers do call in, we can actually improve the quality of the data, so we really appreciate it when our customers call. We get to talk to them. We get to help them find a solution, and they too can contribute to a more accurate database.

What's your favorite thing about being on the editorial team?

The team itself. It's a great group of individuals. All of us have very similar backgrounds, and have a passion for what we do. We collaborate together very well. All of us have the same goal, which is to create the most accurate data, so that our users can fix cars correctly.

Why is it important to repair shops to have accurate and quality data? How does that help their businesses?

It's really important for our customers to have accurate data because they're making repair decisions based on the data that's in front of them. If the data that's in front of them is inaccurate, they could potentially repair a vehicle improperly, and it could be delivered to the customer with an unsafe repair.

Why is Mitchell’s database better than our competitors' databases?

Mitchell's database is better than our competitors’ because of the people we have that develop the data. It's not just un-processed, un-filtered OEM information. The editors on the staff are veterans of the industry, and apply that knowledge to the OEM data itself to produce the most accurate data in the industry.

How do you stay current?

We stay current by being actively involved in the industry. We attend OEM training. We attend other industry trainings, such as re-finish, welding. All of us are I-CAR and ASE certified. Just being out in the shops, working with the technicians, working with the vehicles hands-on, we can stay current in the most recent and up to date repair methods.

What do you personally get out of coming to work every day?

What I personally get out of being at Mitchell every day is an incredible sense of pride that I'm able to give back to the industry that I come from.

I came to Mitchell because I wanted to - I've used Mitchell products my whole life. I appreciated the value that they brought to the industry, and to have the opportunity to give back to the industry that I'm from, it's a dream job. I don't have to have an alarm clock. I jump up out of bed every morning because I get to come work for Mitchell. It's a great place to work.
