Close Up: Meet the Mitchell Editorial Team, Mike May

Mike has seen a lot of change at Mitchell since he started 25 years ago. The way Mitchell delivers its products has changed; however one thing hasn’t, customers still need accurate data so they can complete the job on budget, safely and on time.

What did you do before you came to Mitchell?

Before I came to Mitchell, I was a Jaguar technician, and prior to that, my wife and I owned a garage for 15 years. The benefit for being a garage owner allows me to tailor my information or my way I look at things more towards what the technician really needs and what the business owner really needs from the technician.

What are the biggest changes you’ve seen in the industry from when you started?

The biggest changes I’ve seen at Mitchell since I started 25 years ago have been in the way we collect our data and publish it. When I started, it was all print material, and now it's all electronic. Manufacturers’ information has done the same thing – it’s gone from books to online.

What's your favorite thing about being on the editorial team?

My favorite thing about working at Mitchell is being able to interact with the other technicians, and the other writers. I enjoy the challenge of digging out manufacturers' information and providing that information to our customers, because some of it is a bit difficult to find.

Why is it important to repair shops to have accurate and quality data? How does that help their businesses?

Repair shops need accurate data so they can complete the job on budget and on time, but also to prevent any injuries if they're doing an unfamiliar job. Doing the job right the first time is money in the bank, but if there's an injury, that slows everything down.

Why is Mitchell’s database better than our competitors' databases?

Mitchell's database is better than our competitors’ because of the people who research it and enter it and maintain it. Those folks are also technicians, so they walk the walk and are familiar with what technicians in the field need.

How do you stay current?

I stay current with technology by watching the manufacturers' websites and through online publications and print publications. I also visit friends in the field.

What do you personally get out of coming to work every day?

At the end of the day, I have the satisfaction of knowing that we've entered the most accurate, up to date information that’s available. It's also self-satisfaction because I get to see all the new technology that's coming out.
