Meet the man behind our Frame Dimensions Database, Tom Beres

This time we’re sitting down with Collision Repair Supervisor, Tom Beres!

What are the biggest changes you’ve seen in the industry since you started at Mitchell 25 years ago?

The biggest changes I've seen at Mitchell would definitely be the technology, how we collect the data, how we deliver the data, clearly the measuring hardware, the software, everything.

Can you walk us through a typical customer interaction?

A typical customer interaction would be a customer calls with a question about a body or frame dimension. I will ask what product they are using and ask what specific dimension they are having a problem with.

At that point, I will share with the customer that Mitchell measures every vehicle in the dimension data base and I can share the original measurement, and in most cases the dimension can be cross reference with OEM information that Mitchell licenses from the manufacturers.

I will take the opportunity to share that each dimension in the database goes through an edit, proof, and QA process. If time permits, I will take the customer through a quick TechAdvisor tutorial, highlighting the product strengths, like the interactive database screen.

tom beresWhy is it important to customers to have accurate and quality data? How does that help their businesses?

It's important to have accurate data because we want to supply the customer with data that will assist in a quality repair. We want to make sure that our products are providing a profitable solution to minimize the cycle times for them. The goal is to make their “work –day” easier!

How much of your job is devoted to making sure the database is accurate?

One hundred percent of my job is dedicated to creating the most accurate dimension database.

From measuring the vehicles at the Technical Resource Center (TRC) to the editorial cycle; editing, proofing, and the QA of the data. We utilize OEM information, I’m talking to customers and business partners on the phone. It's what I do every day, it is about building a better database.

Why is Mitchell’s database better than our competitors' databases?

The reason why Mitchell's database is excelling in the industry is because the collision repair department measures each and every vehicle in the database. We cross-reference the measured data with the OEM information, as we process the data through an editorial cycle.

There's a wealth of experience throughout the content management team, and that is what drives Mitchell's superior databases.

Can you describe what the Technical Research Center is?

The Technical Research Center (TRC) is the facility Mitchell dedicated for measuring vehicles and database development. It's a resource for the “whole” Mitchell Editorial team; Labor, Parts, and Repair Standards.

What do you personally get out of coming to work every day?

At the end of the day, it's the satisfaction of knowing we are doing the job right. We are using all the right tools. We are working with the right partners. We are working for the best outcomes for our customers. Mitchell's data is driving solutions. It provides answers. I think that is the most important part. You get that connection with the customer and making their lives easier.
